Backup your files and photos, before it's too late! A simple copy of files to an external hard drive or CD/DVD would surfice, but for better results create a recurring scheduled task to do so.

Batch number files - Highlight all of the files you need to rename, right click on the first file, select Rename and give the file a name, ie: Photo.jpg.
Bonus: Say you wanted to start the numbering at 20, enclose the number in brackets on the first file, ie: Photo (20).jpg
